FAQs
How can our monoclonal antibodies be used?
Our monoclonal antibodies are highly specific, targeting a range of filamentous, yeast and yeast-like fungi capable of causing life-threatening invasive infections and respiratory diseases in humans. The antibodies are provided as affinity purified preparations in two sizes for use in a wide range of immunoassay applications including, but not limited to, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Sandwich ELISA, Immunofluorescence (IF), Immunogold Electron Microscopy (IEM), and Western Blotting (WB). All of the antibodies have been rigorously tested and their development and applications reported in the scientific literature (see datasheet accompanying each Monoclonal Antibody to buy online).
What types of fungal infections affect humans, and how common or severe are these infections?
Fungi are responsible for superficial infections of the skin and nails, causing athlete’s foot and ringworm of the scalp, and infections of the oral and genital tract, especially vulvovaginal candidiasis (or thrush). Together, these superficial infections are thought to affect ~1.7 billion humans worldwide every year. Environmental fungi such as Alternaria, Cladosporium, and Penicillium are allergenic species found in the home and exacerbate respiratory diseases such as asthma. Fungi such as Aspergillus and the Mucorales are responsible for life-threatening invasive infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals such as haematological malignancy patients, and recipients of solid organ and allogeneic stem cell transplants. While the incidence of invasive infections is much lower than superficial infections, they are of greater concern because of the unacceptably high mortality rates. Conservative estimates show that invasive pulmonary aspergillosis alone affects >200,000 humans worldwide each year with mortality rates of between 30-95%. Emerging fungal pathogens of humans such as Fusarium, Scedosporium, Trichoderma, and Trichosporon add to the disease burden in these high-risk patient groups.
What fungal diseases affect animals, and which species are particularly impacted?
Fungi are serious debilitating pathogens of animals, responsible for a range of diseases including aspergillosis in wild and captive birds, scedosporiosis in dogs, horses, cattle, and seals, and mycotic abortions and dermatomycoses in farm animals. Emerging fungal diseases of animals include fusariosis of sea turtle eggs caused by Fusarium keratoplasticum and Fusarium falciforme, white-nose syndrome in bats caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans, and chytridiomycosis, a lethal epizootic disease of amphibians which is thought to have contributed to the extinction of over two hundred species of frogs, toads, and salamanders and the population declines of many more.
